Information for Brittany Ferries
Brittany Ferries was a company founded by Breton Alexis Gourvennec in 1972. The idea stemmed from the opportunity seen by farmers in Brittany for exporting their artichokes and cauliflowers to the UK. What started out as a humble beginning has today, turned out to be one of the leading maritime carriers on the central and western Channel.
The company was set to looking for the best route to the new market, Britain, as Brittany has been an isolated market for a long time.
At first, the company attempted to contact shipping companies to see if any would interested in operating the western Channel to Plymouth route. Since there were no takers to the idea, Gourvennec and the other farmers bought their own freighter and they called it 'Kerisnel'.
Today, the company still belongs to that group of farmers.
Success in Ferrying Tourists
Today, Brittany Ferries is also known for its Ferry and holiday offers. It was in the 1970's when they first offered ferry-inclusive holidays, while still maintaining the business of ferrying fresh produce. At that time, Brittany Ferries' Plymouth-Santander route was the fastest one available for tourists who wanted to visit Northern Spain.
The 1980's signaled the acquisition of 2 shipping companies and this allowed Brittany Ferries to grow further as the number of ships not only increased; there were more routes added as well and by the end of the decade, the company has surpassed 1 million passengers.
Continuing on today, Brittany Ferries only grew further, adding more ships to the fleet and gaining more customers for holidays as well.
